Rundown

I guess the past few weeks (read:months) finally caught up with me. I've been too cheap to buy my $50 prescription allergy medication, and have instead been using my own cocktail of Sudafed and Zyrtec to lessen my ever-present sinus headache. Usually one or two weekends a month the convergence of too little sleep, too much stress, and way too much pollen keep me in bed, but I haven't had the chance to do that in awhile. And since work's been wearing me out and I decided to train for a 10K, I crashed. Hard.

I went to bed early Thursday night, woke up just long enough to declare Friday a sick day, and finally got out of bed last night after sleeping 40 hours out of 48.

This morning I was feeling some better, so I attempted my scheduled four-mile run, but only made it two miles before walking the other two. My Nike+ run tracker not only is a cool gadget, but serves to motivate me. So I ran another 2.5 miles tonight.

I'm gearing up to run the Cancer Challenge 10K which is, quite coincidentally, on my 38th birthday. Two years ago I couldn't even run the 5K, and now I'm working my way up to the 10K. Who would've thunk it? And yet, my pants aren't getting bigger.

But I did convince my boss to let me work an alternate schedule in June so that I can run at 6 a.m. before it gets too hot and I drink too many diet cokes. He's a runner, therefore he understands my weird obsession. I swear, I never thought I'd be the girl who gets addicted to running, but it's happening. Oh, I still hate it every day. But I love plugging in my Nike+ USB into my laptop and logging my results. I love that I can feel my abs tightening as I run. And I love that the hail damage on my thighs is nearly gone.

Only 3,090 more miles to go before I attain Nike+ "black" status. That ought to take me about 10 years or so.

The fluke puke

If I had to choose an eating disorder, I would choose anorexia. While the physical act of chewing brings me joy and I have an unnatural love for food, I absolutely hate to throw up. So I'd rather do without than to binge and purge.

Unfortunately I've had my share of stomach bugs and once had severe food poisoning, but I've always managed to find an appropriate place to vomit. Growing up, our family had the "puke pan," a porcelain bowl my mom kept under the sink for bouts of sickness that she'd drag out when one of us was sick. We'd throw up, then she'd sterilize it and store it for the next family flu.

For three decades, I've managed to restrict my purging to private places. I'm not the girl who puked at a frat party in college or in a club during a date.

This afternoon, however, while driving down an innocuous Rogers street, my streak ended. I felt a bit nauseous, which I attributed to cramping, and then it happened. Projectile vomiting. While driving.

Have you ever had a puddle of puke on your brand new pants and on your steering wheel? Have you ever driven with your left hand because your right hand was streaked with vomit from trying to catch it before it was too late?

Much too little and much too late.

Thankfully I was only a few miles from my office, and luckily I'd done yoga at lunch and still had my workout gear in a bag in the backseat.

But I still had to pull up in front of our very glass building and walk into my office, which is next door to a vendor's glass-walled office, with puke from my neck to my shins. I had to visit the cleaning closet to secure Lysol and a trash bag to stash my (thankfully washable) clothes after stripping down in the bathroom.

Sadly, I had to cancel my Ruth's Chris dinner with Lori B, which I was really looking forward to. But that was less traumatic than sitting in vomit for my 45 commute.

Once home, I threw my clothes in the washing machine, liberally sprayed my car with carpet cleaner, scrubbed out the puke stains, and walked in the house to throw up again.

In case you're wondering, I had leftover cheese dip for lunch. No dairy for this gal for a few days, because I eventually got hungry again tonight and seem to be over whatever died in my stomach.

Granted, it could have been worse. Someone else could have puked on me.

Brain fart

I need a vacation.

I know... I know. I've been on vacation a lot of days this past month. But driving for 20 out of the 96 hours of your vacation does not count as rest. I need sleep.

Even though I was sick today and sound like I should be charging $1.99 a minute to talk to me on the phone, I have been productive all day. Crossed a lot off my to-do list at work. Bought some more Christmas gifts (one for Hope, four for me). Addressed and stamped Christmas cards. Baked eight dozen cookies. Oh, and I went to the gym at 6 a.m. and did 30 minutes on the elliptical machine. NO MORE FAT CLOTHES!

But I also sat in an admissions meeting this morning and we were discussing a student (no FERPA violations here) who was born in 1975. " So how old is she?" someone asked. "29" I replied. Um, not even close, stupid Director of Admissions.

Then I had lunch with my friend Paige at PF Chang's, and it was very expensive for her since she not only bought my lunch, but I talked her into ordering a new MacBook Pro when she got home tonight. You're welcome, Bryan.

Tomorrow it's the gym, meeting (yawn), work, then driving to Mountain Home.

When is it time to sleep? Oh yeah, that's what I should be doing now. Oops!

Queen of Denial

In my family, we don't have uncomfortable conversations. Instead, we ignore the elephant in the room, pretend bad stuff isn't happening, and hope whatever makes us nervous simply goes away.

We're also obsessed with food. My grandmother, for example, talks about nothing except what she's eaten, what she's going to eat, or what she wants to eat.

So I suppose it should be no surprise that I've been avoiding the scale lately. Yes, I knew my clothes were tighter than they used to be. That muffin top at the KISS concert was no fluke. Even Brady asked me last weekend why I always wear my clothes too tight. Out of the mouths of babes, I guess.

But today the scale couldn't be avoided when I went to the doctor. I've been fighting a sinus infection for weeks, but I've been on antibiotics for a couple of weeks, so I assumed it would go away. It did not. This morning I woke up under the weather and went to the doctor to make sure it was not strep.

My blood pressure is fine. I had no fever. I did have, however, eight more pounds than I used to have.

The doctor's office called to ask if I could show up 30 minutes earlier, which I did, then they made me wait for 45 minutes. Granted, it's flu season and I'm sure they're busy, but I fumed the whole time. Turns out it was not strep, but rather a persistently annoying sinus infection that 10 days of antibiotics didn't cure. So now I have more.

Other than whining and feeling the need to make my mom's famous lime sherbet freezes when I have a sore throat, being sick somehow makes me feel like I have permission to eat junk I wouldn't normally eat. So I went to Walmart and bought a cart full of oreos, potato chips, and iced sugar cookies.

Hence the trip to the gym tonight for the treadmill and elliptical machine. I will NOT get fat again. Seriously. If I have to go to the gym three times a day in order to keep from going back up a size, that's what I'll do.

Kate Moss recently said that noting tastes as good as being skinny feels. I don't know about that, but I do agree with my pal Sorne, who says that she loves to eat more than she hates working out. So bring on the Christmas food, and schedule my cardio.

Sniffle, sneeze, strep

Yeah, allergies suck. Almost as much as strep throat. Gross.

So I guess I'm in bed for a few days. :( And taking $60 worth of meds.

Snug as a slug

It's been a whole week since I've done any sort of physical activity. Granted, a year ago that wouldn't have seemed so strange. But given what a freak I've been about exercise in the past few months, that's unheard of. I refuse to gain back the weight I've lost.

Yesterday I called in sick and slept all day (actually, I emailed in sick... does anyone call in sick anymore?). I'm not sure if I was warding off a sinus infection or just paying for too many nights of not enough sleep, but after two doses of Nyquil and seven hours of napping, I feel as good as new. I was also able to clean off hours of stuff from my DVR, so when the new television season starts, I should be good to go. It's strange how much pressure I feel when that thing begins to fill up and I see "about a day" left on some of the shows I record.

Tonight I brutally cleaned out my closet and got rid of anything I can no longer wear. It always pains me to give up pricey clothes, but I realized last week that having things altered is nearly as expensive as buying new stuff. So now I have two trash bags full of clothes that I'm sending to some friends who have a non-profit organization for young women. At least I feel like my seldom-worn clothes are going to good use. I'm purging them lest I feel the need to gain back into them. Of course, if I continue to lay around like a slug and not exercise, my new clothes may get too tight.

This is all the stuff I took out of my closet.

I've already bought my first pair of boots this season. And football is on TV. Fall can officially begin!

Life goes on

It's day five of coughing, sniffling, sneezing, stuffy head, and fever. I've gone through three boxes of tissue and two packages of cough drops, but I think I'm on the downhill slide now. I have a short meeting in the morning, and I asked for the rest of the day off. That will give me three-and-a-half blissful days of rest and relaxation before getting back to work.

Sickness aside, I'm getting really tired of this life purgatory. There's so much to do and I don't have the energy for any of it. I need to sell my house but I haven't taken the time to buy the sign. I need to move my office but I haven't packed a single thing. I did leave something in my new office today, so I guess I'm slowly making progress.

Today was graduation from my leadership class which means no more monthly meetings and no more reason for LB and I to be around each other unless we choose to. I really hate that things are still awkward between us, but they totally are. I find myself not knowing what to say, not knowing how to act, and feeling weird. Obviously he feels the same way because we sat across from one another at lunch today and said about three words to each other. Lots of looks, very little conversation. Oh, I know we'll get past it, but it makes me sad. Really, really sad.

But tomorrow is another day. And tomorrow night's a party. With other friends and LB. Wonder if he'll bring a date...

Sneeze, sniffle, cough

Been in bed all day. Diagnosis? Sinusitis. That's good news considering I was around two people with strep this weekend.

I really, really need to go to work tomorrow, so I'm hoping my shot kicks in soon.

Love sick

I think I must be allergic to Valentine's Day.

It all started on Tuesday, when I woke up stuffy. Stuffy turned to sniffly, which turned to sneezy, which turned to achy, feverish and miserable.

Yesterday I had to speak at a luncheon, and I've been in bed since then. I tried Nyquil, Vick's on the feet, and cough drops. I do feel a bit better than I did last night, but I still sound like I could make $3.99 a minute on a 900 line. Thankfully LB called last night and I got to talk sexy to him.

Sickness aside, I am in a great mood because God granted me the best Valentine's gift of all, answered prayer. So what if I sleep alone... I've got the unwavering love of an awesome Savior, and sometimes He just blows me away!

TGI Thursday

I'm still sick. It's been a week and I'm tired of coughing my head off.

I slept 12.5 hours last night. I always wake up around 6:30 without an alarm, but I woke up at 9:30 this morning. Thankfully I'd already warned work that I would be late. I had a lunch meeting with some faculty and I coughed so much some chick brought me a glass of water.

This afternoon I went to Rogers for another meeting. I applied to be in a county leadership program and was accepted, so the fun and frivolity started this evening, when we were forced to mingle and describe ourselves in four words. My four: friends, faith, football and single. (Sorry, family! I had to get the single in there just in case.) In two weeks we have a retreat where we get to do a ropes course. I hate heights and it's 9,000 degrees outside. Can't wait!

Sorry I'm a grouch. I'm just so sick of being sick. I know that I've been running far too much lately and that my body's rebelling, but seriously, a lot of people are just as busy at work and have families. Jen worked a 31-hour shift this week in trauma, and she's less whiny than me.

I need a vacation.

Thankfully my boss took pity on me, told me to "pace myself," and to take the day off tomorrow. Yipee! I have one meeting I can't cancel, but other than that, I have 72 straight hours planned of Nyqil and movies and blessed napping.

Sinuses and sunburn

Well I'm back in Benton County for now. Lola and I have logged over 700 miles since Tuesday, and I'm pooped. I got sick in Kansas City on Thursday night, so when I got up yesterday morning, I had to go to the doctor for a shot to cure my sinus infection.

Yesterday afternoon Estella, Joe and I rented a pontoon boat on Lake Norfork. It was hotter than blue blazes, but we had fun. Now I'm sunburned and coughing and sniffling. Hopefully I'll get to feeling better soon.

And the sneezing continues...

Not much to report. I've been in bed all day, doped up on Nyquil. Hope tomorrow is better!

Death and taxes

Spring is a beautiful season. I love it when the trees leaf, flowers bloom, and it starts to stay daylight longer. Spring also means the onslaught of allergies and the need for the lawn to be mowed.

I've been sick all day with a runny nose, sore throat, and severe headache. But at least I got caught up on my DVR. And the better news is that my taxes are done, and I'm getting a refund from state and federal. Not a huge refund, mind you (I know someone who's getting a $10K refund... really), but I'm always happy if I don't have to pay.

Tomorrow one of my coworkers and I are headed to Little Rock for a conference. We're staying at the Peabody which evidently has the state's most comfortable beds. And we're stopping in the Fort tomorrow to see Ashley and the twins. I'm so excited!

Not tonight, dear

I had a rough, rough night. I woke up sometime in the middle of the night with an excruciating headache. Only once in my life has my head hurt this bad: when I had the flu. One of my coworkers had the flu last week. I haven't had a flu shot. You do the math.

18 hours later, I'm convinced that I do NOT have the flu. I'm not quite sure what I do have, however. I still have a horrible headache and fever, but no other symptoms.

I started back on Weight Watchers yesterday and started my new "no eating after 7 p.m." rule. Perhaps that was it. And I didn't drink anything but water for dinner (no caffeine), so that could be it.

So I spent all day napping and feeling sorry for myself.

I so do NOT have time to be sick. Franklin Graham's on campus tomorrow. I have to see Zig on Wednesday. I'm driving to Little Rock on Thursday. And I'm emceeing a pageant on Saturday (and still have to write the script).

Ah, the life of the working gal.
