Shame on you, Brett Favre

It's time to get over yourself, Brett Favre. I'm sure you must love being on the cover of every sports website, magazine, and television show. Someone obviously cares that your arm is sore after practice today, since both ESPN and si.com felt the need to make it a top story.

I, for one, am sick of it. And while I was never a Packers fan, I did enjoy watching watching you play. You seemed to have a love of the game that transcended ego.

But obviously your ego was too big to retire. Instead you thumbed your nose at the loyal Packers fans, asking to be traded to Minnesota or Chicago in order to compete against Green Bay.

What did those people ever do to you, except love you unconditionally? Even when you threw wild passes and had more interceptions than touchdowns. Even after a mediocre 8-8 season in 2006.

Those cheeseheads deserve better. So I therefore vow to root against the Jets every game they play this season. Even if it's against the Giants or Eagles.

Rock on, Aaron Rogers.

I have to wonder about your legacy. When you're inducted at Canton, will anyone be in the stands wearing #4? Probably not any Packers fans.

Nobody's Perfect

Evidently no one told the New York Giants that the Pats were unbeatable. With words like "history" and "dynasty" dying on the lips of New England fans everywhere, Eli didn't choke. The Manning brothers won back-to-back world championships, and the NFC won the Super Bowl for the first time in a long time. I'm sad for Tom Brady, though. Wonder if he needs me to go to Boston and comfort him...

I can't believe the weekend's gone. I spent most of it feeling like poo and lying around coughing and sneezing, so you'd think it would have been relaxing. Yeah, not so much. So tomorrow it's back to the old grind. I figured out this weekend that I had about 7,500 more days to work in my lifetime. That's really depressing.

Tonight Dad and Vickie brought the kids up to watch the game. I made ribs, pulled pork, fries, corn on the cob, baked beans, biscuits, no bake cookies, and brownies for dinner. It was yummy, if I do say so myself. The game... not so much. This is me and the kids at halftime.

I just started reading Beth Moore's book about John the Baptist, "The Beloved Disciple." I'm a huge fan of her books; she always has such great insight and wonderful words. The first chapter discusses all of the people who followed John the Baptist, and she points out that he was a good leader because of who he was following. "John the Baptist turned out to be a man worth following precisely because they followed him straight to Jesus," Moore states. What a leadership model. Only if we're leading others to Christ are we worth following. Otherwise we're just leading them astray.

Tired, sore and sleepy

I'm officially pooped. For some reason I couldn't sleep last night, so I finally got up at 1:30 a.m. and started packing. I finally went back to sleep around 4 a.m., then got up again at 7:30. I made several fruitless attempts to nap this morning to no avail.

Joe picked me up and we ate lunch at Michelangelo's. It was amazing! I had bruschetta, some kind of pasta I couldn't pronounce and my favorite dessert, tiramasu. Unfortunately the waiter spilled iced tea down Joe's back and on the front of his jeans before the appetizers, but he was a good sport about it. And the poor guy felt very bad.

After a trip to Lowe's for about the fifth day in a row, I came home and napped during most of the Pats game. Then I spent the whole Packers/Giants game, including overtime, packing. I'm so sick of packing! The last day is the worst... that's when you get down to the stuff that won't fit in boxes or doesn't really fit into any category. That's when you start labeling boxes "bunch of crap." Thankfully I'm finally finished and ready for the movers to get here at 8 a.m. Ugh.

The good news is that they're delivering my furniture on Tuesday, which gives me the rest of the week to get settled before starting work on Monday. The bad news is that, should they schedule the delivery as early as the pick-up, I'll have a logistical nightmare. I was supposed to spend tomorrow night at Mount Nebo, but if I have to be in Siloam by 8 a.m. on Tuesday, that's just not happening. Of course, I hate to drop 80 bucks on a hotel room, but I don't think I can handle getting up at 5 a.m. and driving on Tuesday morning. Decisions, decisions.

I'm going to bed. No actually, I'm going to couch since the bed has been stripped and packed. Can't wait for a normal life again!

Speaking of, I haven't scheduled my cable/internet installation yet, so this may be my last post for a few days. Have a great week, everyone!

Oh, and can you believe the G-men are in the Super Bowl? Guess Eli's unstoppable after all. At least 'til he meets the Patriots.

Queen of denial (football, part dos)

It's a sad, sad day Cowboys fans. I mean, to lose your first game as the #1 seed in the conference is bad enough, but to lose it to your biggest division rival (who you beat twice in the regular season) is just devastating. I couldn't bear to watch the last 45 seconds or so... I figured I was a jinx since I turned off the Buffalo and Detroit games when it seemed hopeless and the 'Boys found a way to come back and win. But alas, no such luck this time. Guess I'm not the only bad luck charm... I'd bet Jessica Simpson had better not show her face in Dallas for years.

But congrats to the Bolts, who managed to upset the Colts in Indy. Who would have thought that Eli would be the Manning brother in the conference championship?

I feel like I could throw up. But at least I'm wearing my Patriots t-shirt. And I'm almost done packing.

Some random thoughts

Last Wednesday my dad, my brother, my nephew, and I were sitting at the McDonald's play place, and we talked about last week's "Sexiest Men Alive" list. In the interest of fairness, I asked them who would be on their female list. Beyonce, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Lopez... turns out they like ethnic chicks with large cabooses.

So I'm watching the Giants debacle this afternoon, and I'm thinking that the Citizen Watches execs are probably not too happy with the marketing folks as their expensive commercial, "Unstoppable, that's what Eli Manning is..." airs right after young Manning throws a pick that's returned for a touchdown. Ouch. That's bad product placement. For those of you keeping score, the G-Men got trounced 41-10 by the Minnesota Vikings WITHOUT Adrian Peterson. Anybody want to buy a watch?

I started my annual house rearrangement/holiday decoration this afternoon. I've got four trees up and three to go. But don't worry, only one of them is taller than three feet (that's about the size of your tree, Memaw Scrooge). Pics to come.

Turns out I'm not the only one who loves the Thanksgiving Friends episodes. Entertainment Weekly did a great story about all the turkey episodes. Who can forget the Geller bowl?

I've managed to watch four of the eight hours of stuff on my DVR that I've missed since Tuesday afternoon. I hope the writers' strike ends soon. Otherwise, I may have to decorate some more trees. Or watch more movies. This afternoon I watched one of my holiday favorites, Love Actually. But it's not really Christmas until I watch Christmas Vacation. Nobody does the holidays like the Griswolds.
